After a few years as mechanic in Team Honda Europe, working with Henk Hellegers on the development of the Dakar kit for the bikes Gerben has decided to participate himself. It shows the strengh and spirit of the team: everyone involved is or has been active in motorsports, often at a high level.

Gerben has had bad luck during his preparation for this Dakar. Only a month ago he broke his wrist during a two-day Enduro. His injury has healed but he will have to be carefull the first days, to see were his limits are at the moment. "I had to change my plans quite a bit. But perhaps it is better this way. My wrist forces me to be carefull, and to make sure my riding is relaxed and controlled during the competition. My physical training continued the last month, so I won't have any problems there. From februari/march I've spend a lot of time on my mountainbike and in the gym with a bunch of motorcrossers."
"After the teampresentation people around me understood I really was participating in Dakar 2010, and supported me with great enthousiasm." Gerben tells he is looking forward to the rally, and to see what he is able to do. "I will have to look at my results from day to day. Technical stuff and tough terrain is my arena, I won't take too much risk at high speeds anyway. After a few days I'll find the speed that matches my riding style and experience, and I'll land at the right spot in the ranking."
